While the US studied Mars, the USSR focused their efforts on the planet Venus. the Venera program lasted more than 20 years and sent 8 numbered craft, of a similar design that were updated as scientists learned from prior missions. Venera 3 was it's first major success when it became the first man-made object to impact an extraterrestrial planet in 1966.
